Tensei was listening to a bunch of classic hip hop before this session and accordingly we felt the need to micro chop this sample similar to DJ Premier or J dilla. In that vien, we started off with some boom bap drums and Kramer played the sample chops live while Midas played bass. After setting out the foundation, we wanted to add some more depth to the horn and string samples and reached out to frequent collaborators Alex Brinkman (cello) and Regis Molina (sax) to play some lines and also improvise. After mashing up all the parts solstice was created. We went with the name because solstice are both the longest and shortest days of the year and this track has the longest and shortest samples we used on the project.
